7 Books About Archaeology for Kids!

Reading is a gateway to so much more. I try and read to my kids every night. My husband is lucky in that there are lots of kids’ books about his job, being a pilot. While there are quite a few about being an archaeologist, few are done well. Here are a few of my favorites!

  1. Little Archaeologist This book is from the Smithsonian. It is for kids under four and covers tools and items associated with archaeology. My littlest loves this book because she can read it by looking at the pictures.
  2. The Street Beneath My Feet by Charlotte Guillain. I love that this book highlights everything that the earth beneath us can teach us. This book is beautifully illustrated and is for kids under ten. Bonus, it is part of a series.
  3. Archaeologists Dig for Clues by Kate Duke. This book is for 12 and under. It dives into what archaeologists really do. This is the BEST book in terms of reality and what archaeology is all about.
  4. Archaeologists on a Dig by Sue Fliess is a part of the Kid scientist series. This book is also in that ten and under group. This book is excellent because it has a nice story and all the lessons about archaeology.
  5. Archaeology for Kids North America. This is a part of the Baby Professor series for the ten and under age group. This book covers a wide range of topics but nicely does highlight archaeology.
  6. The Edmund Fitzgerald: Song of the Bell by Kathy-Jo Wargin. This book is for the ten and over kids. This is an excellent book about one of the most exciting shipwrecks and archaeological projects in the great lakes region. If you don’t know the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald, this is a great introduction.
  7. Gutsy Girls Go For Science: Paleontologists: With Stem Projects for Kids by Karen Bush Gibson. This book is not strictly speaking archaeology but is highlights some great female scientists and has experiments for you to do at home with your kids.

These are just a few of the many, many books that are out there. Most of these books are also available at local libraries! Once you find a topic within the umbrella of archaeology that interests you or your kids, it is easy to do a deep dive.

Purchasing through these links does give me a small commission. Always buy books the way that feels best to you, whether via amazon or a small book store, as long as you are reading!
